On April 18th, join us for a special Wild Seasider rail journey celebrating the landscapes, wildlife and natural history of Ōtepoti Dunedin.
Hosted in partnership with the University of Otago Department of Geology and Wild Dunedin: New Zealand Festival of Nature, this unique experience offers a rare opportunity to explore the region through the eyes of expert geologists.
Discover Dunedin’s Geology Up Close
Our onboard geologists will be sharing a collection of real local rock specimens throughout the journey. These hand-sized samples — including Otago Schist, Caversham Sandstone, Port Chalmers volcanic breccia and columnar basalt — are the same rock types that shape the landscapes you’ll see outside the train.
With hand lenses available to use, passengers can look closely at the details hidden inside each rock, while our roving geologists explain the fascinating geological story of the region.
We’ll also have fun geology activities for kids, making the Wild Seasider a great adventure for curious minds of all ages.
